History

In 2005 the initial the initial alignment for the Wekiva Trail was included in the Lake County Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

In 2008 additional planning work was completed as part of the Lake County Trails Master Plan and identified the regional need for a trail that would connect the Seminole Wekiva Trail in Seminole County with the West Orange Trail in Orange County and provide a gateway to the trail systems in East Lake County.  This planning effort was coordinated with the City of Mount Dora Master Plan, also completed in 2008.

As part of the Project Developement and Environment (PD&E) Study for the Wekiva Parkway a Trail Assessment was completed in 2009.  This trail assessment was followed with a Wekiva Trail Feasibility Study completed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in 2010.

Based on the alignments provided by the Feasibility Study, the FDOT funded the PD&E Study for the Wekiva Trail that is currently underway.  This PD&E Study will ensure the impacts to the environment have been taken into consideration prior to Design and Construction of the ultimate trail.  Additionally, the PD&E Study will ensure that this important regional trail system is coordinated with the ongoing design of the Wekiva Parkway.
